Step 1: We went back to the ant colony site and measured the circumference of three trees (that were closest to the mound) at chest height.
Number of Tree
Type of Tree
Circumference (cm)
Distance from tree to colony (cm)
Tree #1
spruce
1m 38cm
2m 90cm
Tree #2
spruce
83cm
2m 40cm
Tree #3
spruce
11cm
60cm
Height of colony (cm) -- 1m 45cm
Diameter of colony (cm) -- 1m 40cm

As the season changes, the percentage of canopy cover and green ground cover also changes.

Canopy cover decreased to 35%

Green ground cover decreased to 30%

Active Level is 1. We did not see a single ant at all.

On day 2 of the woods ants investigation, we went to the same location to check out if anything changed. We obserbed the canopy cover in the area and the ground cover. We also collected a wood ant as our specimen and considered ants in relation to the environment.

Step 1: We found the location of the ant colony by getting the GPS coordinates.
Longitude:70'41 east
Latitude: 46''20'32 north

Step 2: We named the colony "Judy Gross"

Step 3: We observed the canopy cover by standing at the base of the mound and looked up into the tree cover. The canopy cover was covering 75%

Step 4: Next we observed the green ground cover by standing at the base of the mound.
Green ground cover: 60%

Step 5: We measured the activity level of the colony by a scale of 1 - 10. The activity level was 4 meaning that it was very inactive.

This is not a good way to rate activity level as we can not see inside the mound and we don't know if they're in there or not without possibly disrupting the mound.

Ant Colony Mapping

10/5/2015

Data Collection
: Data 10/1/2015

Name of the colony
Longitude
Latitude
Judy Gross
7'03''East
42''20'27 North
75% of this colony was covered by canopy and 60% was covered by green ground.

Activity level was a 4 out of 10. The ants were hidden in their mound (where their colony resides) and they only came out with person A hit the mound with a stick. As soon as the stick made contact with the mound, the ants came pouring out of the opening in a panic.

Procedure:

1 - Walked down the area near the Beau Reveil forest.

2 - Located a wood ant mound

3 - No ants were present on the mound so 2/3 group members hit the mound with a stick causing the ants to panic.

4 - Recorded observations & took pictures

5 - Take GPS location
