Aquaponics
The aquaponics system used in our classroom is modeled after the aquaponics systems at Growing Power, an organization in Milwaukee, Wisconsin dedicated to sustainable urban farming. In our aquaponics system, we grow tilapia fish and a variety of fresh herbs and vegetables, including basil, mint, watercress, tomatoes, nasturtium, lemongrass, cucumbers, bok choy, and tomatillos. While growing food, students learn about water quality testing, aquaponics as a system, the nitrogen cycle, and other topics related to IB Environmental Systems and Societies.
The documents below are completed by students during the time they are in charge of aquaponics system maintenance. Water quality testing data is located at the bottom of the page and is updated regularly beginning at the end October, 2016.
