Today we went to the forest to observe our ant mound. We were surprised that there was not much activity as the weather was very nice. We continued to observe the biotic factors surrounding colony Z.

Questions:
  1. The wood ant colony is dependent on the species in its surrounding environment, as all organisms are in an ecosystem. Therefore, it is useful to observe and record information about the trees around the wood ant colony.
  2. The independent variable would be having two trees and they would be different sizes. The dependent variable would be the differences in the ant mounds because of the different tree sizes.
  3. Respiration is the process by which heat is given off when work is done so we believe that this would be the process to melt the snow off of the ant mounds.
